ALSO, about this Blog... Just in case you were wondering

I've started this blog to serve as an information link between myself, the members of the Scrollworks choir and community, as well as their parents. I hope that you will all check the blog at least a few times a week as I will be posting information that pertains to you as often as I can. I could be posting things like recordings of voice parts on certain songs, articles that relate to you as musicians, concerts that we will be having, opportunities to perform that arise for the choir, or anything that I think you might find interesting.

Your first assignment for choir will be to find the blog and comment on a post (Very difficult and painstaking, I know, but hang in there) Remember to sign your name at the bottom of your comments so I know who is speaking!

Also, at some point I will post the choir syllabus on the blog for all to see, understand, and adhere to ;)

...Yes that is a winking smiley, and yes, I sometimes use emoticons...

I want this to become a community for us where we can exchange data and opinions so that we can continue to learn from each other during the week when we aren't in class. I am relying on all of you to help me do this. Feel free to relay things that you feel are helpful or relevant to me via email, and they MIGHT just show up on here! I will always be sure to credit anyone who contributes to a post.

Because of the MASSIVE amounts of USEFUL information I will be putting on here, if you ask me a question I have already answered or posted, I will most likely ask you to check the blog!

I hope I have accurately expressed the role I want this blog to play for our choir. I hope you have received and understood that goal. I hope you will check the blog regularly.

So please... CHECK THE BLOG :D

Scrollworks Choir Auditions

Auditions for choir will be held at 12pm this Saturday, June 4th in the chapel at Highlands UMC.

Please come prepared to do any or all of the following:
-Sing various scales
-Match pitch/intervals/phrases
-Match clapped rhythms
-Sing "My Country 'Tis of Thee" (only the 1st verse)
-Sight reading a vocal line

I'll most likely have my computer or notebook out during your performance so that I can take notes of various things (vocal tambre, vocal range, etc) so when you see me writing, don't get nervous! I will also take your picture to pair with your info page so that I can begin learning names.

I would assume that all of you know the lyrics and tune to the 1st verse of "My Country 'Tis of Thee", but just in case you don't, lyrics can be found here and a video of the melody being sung can be found here. Just get the melody down and sing it in a comfortable key. I will change it up when you audition.

The sight reading will not be terribly difficult, so don't stress yourself out about it. This is just to help give me an idea of where everyone's sight singing capabilities are.

I look forward to auditioning all of you! I hope you are ready for an exciting summer semester!

YOU should be in the Scrollworks Choir!!!

Dear Scrollworks students and parents,

Scrollworks is building a choral program and we are searching for as many students as possible who would be interested in singing with us!

The plan is to teach students to become proficient in sight reading and singing choral music, working on correct vocal technique and production, building a large repertoire of challenging choral literature that we can perform in different venues to help build awareness of the Scrollworks program, and possibly to compete in competitions.

The choir is for ANYONE who wants to participate. I would love for every student to be a part of the Scrollworks Choir. There is a possibility for an auditioned choral ensemble that could form at some point this semester or in future semesters.

I intend to take the choir to different churches, or other performance venues to try acquiring more funds and benefactors for the Scrollworks organization and students.

My overall goal is to provide the students of Scrollworks with a choral ensemble that will help them develop superior skills as musicians that they can carry with them the rest of their lives.

If you have any questions, concerns, suggestions, or ideas feel free to email me at cbarbee@myorch.org

I look forward to hearing from and working with you and your children!
